Here is a pencil sketch of our pet peach-faced lovebird Sluggo. He is over 17 years old now and prefers to walk or take a ride on your shoulder to flying. He is a great pet. Sadly, he has outlived his mate and all his children. He is a feisty parrot and seems to enjoy giving our cockatiel a hard time. The cockatiel likes to have his space, while Sluggo is a snuggler. This leads to some entertaining situations.
Lovebirds exude character. Sluggo’s son Pogo was a really entertaining bird. He liked to take naps in my hair and would preen your eyelashes. Pogo devoured all sorts of food. Pretty much the only things he found inedible were bananas and soda. He loved eating rice, spaghetti, and even ice cream. If Pogo was really excited about a particular food he’d run from your shoulder down to your hand and grab the spoon. I guess it is obvious at this point that he spent most of his time out of the cage? Pogo died early at only 7 years old, which reminds us to enjoy every minute we have with Sluggo in his geriatric years. The bottom line is that love birds make incredibly good pets. If you put the time in with them, they really bond with you, and are as rewarding as any other pet big or small.
