This is a pencil sketch of a Spur-winged Plover (Vanellus spinosus) from the Toledo Zoo. They are also sometimes called Spur-winged Lapwings. They get their name from a claw-like spur hidden under each wing. The birds are common in sub-Saharan African tropical wetlands and for the most part are non-migratory. Northern populations in Greece and Turkey however, will migrate. Although absent from the dry regions of the Middle East and northern Africa, these attractive birds can also be found in Israel, spotted locations along the Red Sea, along the Nile River and as far east as the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
