Black-throated Green Warblers are great little birds. Here in Lansing we see them for a few weeks in the spring and fall as they migrate through. The southern edge of their breeding range starts not far from here but excludes us. Their breeding range includes the rural, western New York area where I grew up, and I feel a little deprived not getting them for the whole summer here.
Allaboutbirds.org describes their call as a “high, cheery-sounding buzz, zee zee zo zo zee,” which is how I learned the call years ago. Both of our kids are great with calls. My daughter introduced me to many great memory tricks for warbler calls that she picked up from Larkwire. The one she uses for the Black-throated Green Warbler is “Trees, trees… tall trees.” That works really well; it’s easy to remember and listen for.
