I’ve only painted hummingbirds twice before, and both were commissioned pieces. One featured five males of different species in Arizona and the other two Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. All were fun to paint, especially with those with bright metallic feathers! This bird was nesting in a silver maple in my brothers’ front yard. I was grateful that she cooperated for lots of photos.

There is one other hummingbird project worth mentioning. I was once commissioned to create a Ruby-throated Hummingbird hat out of sheet craft foam, hot glue, and acrylic paint. It was significantly larger than any of these paintings.
